This Cat is In His Bag
“Chaos is the only thing that honestly wants you to grow. The only friend who really helps you be creative.”
Dan Wieden
The music industry is chaos, it is creativity, business, and drive, capitalism at its most complex. You’ll want to learn the inner workings of how a label runs, how royalties are collected, how you can protect your music from other artists/labels who would take a style, lyric, beat or otherwise. You’ll want to know what it takes to promote a solid show or record and how marketing and advertising can affect your business. It’s vital to your career and knowing about it and how it works can change the face of your career quickly.
One such Southwest artist is experiencing a strange world of how marketing, business and history collide. Bag of Tricks Cat is an Arizona staple. He’s regarded highly amongst his peers and has made a chart topping record with fellow Arizona artist Mega Ran. He is currently being forced to change his cover art on his most recent project because of a potential legal concern. The back story is just as important as the potential legal concerns. Bag of Tricks Cat is associated with Felix The Cat cartoon by virtue of his grandmother Ann Bennett was a musician herself. She was the singer who was the voice of the theme song for the Felix The Cat cartoon. She recorded an English and Spanish version is the song for each respective audience. She never got paid her fair share of the cartoons success and is regarded as the iconic voice of a historical cartoon darling in American history. These sorts of legalities and complications can interfere with a musicians success. Fast forward to our current situation regarding cover art, Bag of Tricks Cat reached out to Felix Chevrolet to film a video on their property. They advised him it would be ok to film as long as he had the proper liability insurance. Plans were in the works and then suddenly as Bag of Tricks Cat’s latest project hit Billboard charts with their dealerships likeness as a cover art they changed their position quickly. An Instagram messaged followed asking that Bag of Tricks Cat cease and desist from using the photo as cover art for the album. It has spurred controversy into his projects success and the dealership has not returned any request for a comment.
The big picture is that the music industry and the legal framework that the artist must become familiar with are both difficult but also with odds stacked against you, the individual, the artist. Now this controversy can stop someone easily, luckily Bag of Tricks Cat made a quick change of the cover art that has allowed him to avoid any legal battles but one must also recognize that the album is now reaching a new audience because of the press. You can view the photo that has caused the controversy below and listen to the project as well as see the cover art redesign post controversy.
