Weirdly Huh
“Normal is not something to aspire to, it’s something to get away from.”
Standing at the precipice of an entire new world, whether it be crumbling or slowly building into something strangely dystopian but with potential for a revolution, music and life is entering a new stage, weirdly huh. This new vibe from Jeffrey Misfit is something that is informed from a variety of music, a variety of literature and a philosophy embodied by a culture and generation that seeks hope in its nihilism.
This project Weirdly Huh by Jeffrey Misfit begins with a tongue in cheek intro that examines the moniker Misfit. The explosive energy from Misfit as the verses begin show exactly what is on the mind of the young artist. It is an unapologetic rejection of the conventions of hip hop values, money, numbers, and how they are viewed in public. The artist here seems to be intentionally uncovering the irony and idiosyncrasies of what people feed into the genre of hip hop. As his colleagues from Vagabond Mafia reject conventional thought he continues in that same vein.
Songs are titled with sharpness and possibly sarcasm. The content varies in sound from track to track, however a feeling of melancholy overlays the entire project. The production entirely done by Jeffrey Misfit is very similar to his group mates as it rejects hip hop normativity and creates an emo, indie rock, guitar string infused, and noise rock informed result. There are different vocal effects employed and with each track you get a sense that there is something very personal here and not a performative piece but rather an insight to the introspective world of an artist absorbed in the waves of art, its processes and the results of living the lifestyle of a creative. The project and artist himself mentions David Foster Wallace in his social media posts, this is an interesting homage to an author who wrote quite a bit about the complexity of “normal life”. This project seems to explore the same concepts but in a musical fashion of course.
The project is mad different. Not a typical hip hop project with braggadocio that seeks to exert dominance. This project and artist rather employs a strategy of exhibition of the lifestyle, process and world of art as it pertains to personal experience and how that comes across if an artist is willing to be genuinely unaffected by the opinions of others when putting out something contrary to popular culture. The music is happy, melancholy, aggressive, conciliatory, and weirdly huh. Check out the music by clicking the name below and listen to the album here!
